Music is a tool in church for

• worship, both personally and in groups.
• teaching the Word of God.

It cannot be allowed to do anything else.

Music is a tool, which may be used for many things in non-worship settings. Again, it's most powerful affects are mood-setting and teaching. Just like anything else in our lives, it must meet the requirements for a godly life:

• glorifies God 1Co 10:31
• distinct from the world
• conducive to the growth of the Holy Spirit <what else says "do all"?>

Also, just like all the other tools we use, music is much more effective when the Holy Spirit is working unhindered in the person making the music.
